If you accept a good portion of your payments without the customers credit card being present, then you should consider a MOTO Merchant Account, otherwise known as a Card Not Present or Key-Entered Merchant Account. Some merchants ask themselves, "why should I get a MOTO account when the retail account gives me a lower rate". On a retial account, if you key in the card number on your terminal, you will pay the retail rate, plus the mid or non-qualified rate. In other words, instead of paying the low 1.71%, your transaction is now downgraded and you end up paying 2.84% or considerably higher. Some merchants end up paying over 4% on the transaction. Also, if you key enter a majority of you credit cards, you may end up having your merchant account closed. Key entered merchant accounts allow you to earn more money on your transaction, and by informing credit card issuers that a majority of your transactions are key-entered, the credit card issuers know what to expect from your merchant account. You may pay a slightly higher rate, but in the long term you will be saving more than you pay. So what types of business use a key-entered merchant account? For some businesses, we sign them up on both a retail and key-entered merchant account. For example, if you have a retail store, but also do deliveries, you might want to use your store for your retail merchant account, and have your delivery drivers call in with the credit card information and use your MOTO merchant account for those transactions. Other companies that are national may have a majority of their sales done through the phone, or have credit card information transmitted through email or the US Postal Service.
